Spring has finally sprung in Vermont! Don’t you just love the longer days and that warm sunshine? Although it was a mild winter, it still felt like Spring would never show up. But now that’s it’s here, doesn’t it just make you want to get up and enjoy the outdoors?

If you’re looking for a reason to be active next week, you’re in luck! On Wednesday, April 6th it’s National Walking Day sponsored by the American Heart Association. Since 2007, the AHA has held this event on the first Wednesday in April. The goal is to encourage Americans to get up and get moving on this day, and in turn, use that activity and incorporate it into part of a healthy lifestyle.

“These days, we’re spending more time at work and sitting in front of a screen than ever before. We’re becoming less active, which can increase our risk of heart disease, stroke and other diseases. Take the first step to a healthier life by taking part in the American Heart Association’s National Walking Day. On the first Wednesday in April, we kick off a month-long celebration designed to help us all become more active. On the day of the event, participants are encouraged to lace up their sneakers and take 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk,” stated the American Heart Association.

Walking is a low-risk and easy to start activity. Regular brisk walking can help you with the following:

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Improve your balance and coordination
  • Strengthen your bones and muscles
  • Improve your mood
  • Improve circulation

So what’s not to like about walking? Walking is good for you and it’s an aerobic exercise. We hope you’ll join the movement and participate in the #AHALaceUp National Walking Day!
